Iain. Very good points. The error in not providing a link to the Archive files was mine, not Nick's. (His personal site actually links to them.) I've added a link both in the text and at the end of the article. Thanks for pointing this out.

As for the work that went into getting these released - that is something I hope to cover in future articles on the subject.

I was interested to read this article.

However, given the importance of the files, why haven't you provided a link to the National Archives website -- where they can be found -- or mentioned those whose hard work over the past 10 years helped to persuade the MoD to release these files in the first place?

First of all, the adverse effect on aviation safety is being grossly underestimated. There have been over 3,000 incidents where unidentified objects have interfered with the flight systems of commercial and military aircraft, according to NARCAP, an agency staffed by ex-NASA scientists that the FAA refers pilot UFO sighting to. See: http://narcap.org.

Second, what irritates me about all of this is that the government has essentially lied to the public in a bald-faced manner all these years. Their claims that they were not 'interested' in UFOs, or they had no 'data' turns out to be bogus. I hope the people will revolt enough so that never again will a government withhold pertinent information from the public.

I often wonder how many UFO sightings have gone unspoken. Out here in the countryside we get labeled as idiots if we say we've seen a UFO, but the reality is there are many people that have seen the same thing out here and are afraid to talk about it. We don't want to be labeled when we don't even have the appropriate words to explain what we saw

It is great that we live in such enlightened times. Governments have a duty to release such fascination information. Admittedly there will be people who will make more of things that are sometimes unexplainable however such is life. Knowledge is Power I say.

Very good story. I'll be watching for more disclosures of the UFO files. Maybe we will finally find out what UFOs really are and what they are all about.

As a pilot I am very concerned about flight safety and I think UFO sightings deserve serious scientific investigation and full disclosure of the findings. The possibility that we may have extraterrestrial craft and possibly extraterrestrial beings sharing our airspace is absolutely fascinating, and also warrants serious scientific investigation and full disclosure. I'm looking forward to the future releases of the UFO files and to learning more about the UFO cases.

Thank you for this excellent and informative article.
